English Department
The Three Rivers English Department is committed to the college's philosophy and mission that “educational opportunities should be accessible” to students and supports the college's emphasis on “quality in teaching.” To maintain this emphasis, the department holds as its mission its commitment to students and to student learning. The following criteria for all English Department instructors enable them to reach the departmental mission:
-Instructors understand that strong reading and writing skills are multidisciplinary in nature and foundational to student success; -They establish procedures for effective and appropriate use of selected departmental instructional texts and materials in learning activities; -They comply with departmental standards for thorough syllabi and course schedules, incorporating the acquisition of skills necessary for students to act responsibly and to apply learned academic skills; -They facilitate building an atmosphere that promotes critical thinking; -They can effectively manage and monitor student learning, maintaining strong academic instructions and high grading standards; -They establish and utilize procedures for reviewing and evaluating professional practices in order to improve and enhance instructional practices; -They know the subject and understand how to teach to diverse students; and -They foster collegiality within the learning community that is the Three Rivers English Department.
