The Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department

The Physical Education Department plays an integral part in all degree programs at the college. Offering sports-related, health, and activity courses for transfer degrees.  The program also has two Associate of Arts degree programs: one in Physical Education and one in Pre-Sports Medicine. The Physical Education faculty believe that the development of the physical body needs to be emphasized as well as development of the intellect in a college setting. This supports the college mission in providing transfer programs, and in providing student activities which contribute toward student development.

With education being considered not only as a preparation to earn a living but as a way of life, a commitment to exposing students to concepts of health and wellness and the opportunity to practice healthy lifestyles through exercise are the major focus of the department. Empowering students to develop healthier lifestyles and increasing their general level of wellness are the goals of the department.

The department also operates the Ben and Martha Bidewell Fitness Center, located in the Bess Student Activity Center.  The Fitness Center offers over 2,250 square feet of exercise space, plus five changing rooms and lockers.  There are more then 40 cardiovascular and resistance machines as well as free weight stations.

The Center is available to students, faculty, and staff during the regular and summer semesters.  Students may either enroll in activity courses for credit (2 credit hours are required in the associate degree) or they may purchase a "semester pass" if they do not want college credit.  Passes may be purchased in the Business office.
