Grants
FAFSA applications are available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Initial Pell Grant payments can be expected by approximately mid-semester. Late applicants can expect payment in accordance with receipt and processing of their files. Pell payments are made to the student’s account in order to pay institutional expenses
incurred. If the Pell Grant exceeds the student’s account balance, the student will receive a check for the credit balance. If a student withdraws prior to payment of federal funds, attendance requirements will be used to determine the actual amount a student may be eligible to receive.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants
These grants are available under provisions of the Higher Education Act of 1965 for students who have the greatest financial need. The grants typically range from $300-$600 at TRCC. The FAFSA is necessary to determine a student’s eligibility for FSEOG. The application must be filed in the TRCC Financial Aid Office by April 1 for priority processing. Initial FSEOG payments can be expected by approximately mid-semester.
Academic Competitiveness Grants
The Higher Education Reconciliation Act (HERA) established an additional federal student aid grant for undergraduate students: the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG). This is a need- and merit-based grant for students who meet the additional criteria. The ACG grant program is intended to encourage rigorous academic study in high school. A student may receive only two ACG awards, one for the first and the second academic years. The grant has a set value: $750 for the first year and $1,300 for the second year. To receive an ACG, students must:
Summer Pell Grant Policy  NEW! for 2010
In accordance with the U.S. Department of Education’s guidelines for 2009-2010, Three Rivers Community College has revised their policy on awarding and disbursing summer Pell Grants. For summer 2010, TRCC will pay the Pell Grant award from the 2009-2010 year as a “trailer” during the transition period for the Pell Grant revision. If students use their first scheduled award, and they enroll in a minimum of 6 credit hours in the summer, they may be eligible for a revised Pell award. The objective of the new policy is to help students finance their education and accelerate their graduation.

TRCC Financial Aid defines an aid year as a Fall and Spring semester, with the summer semester as a separate session considered a “trailer” semester. For the 2009-2010 aid year, (Fall09, Spring10, and Summer10 semesters) TRCC will only award students from their 2009-2010 ISIR’s, and will NOT review Pell eligibility from a student’s 2010-2011 ISIR for the Summer 2010 session. TRCC will however, review academic year progression in considering a student’s eligibility for a 2nd Pell of the Summer 2010 semester. A Pell eligible student may qualify for additional Pell funds during the Summer session IF they meet ALL of the following criteria:
  1. Use all of their current aid year Pell eligibility before they can qualify for additional Pell funds,
    AND
  2. Complete at least 24 credit hours by the end of the Spring semester. Complete at least 25 credit hours by the end of the Summer session,
    AND
  3. 3. Be enrolled at least half-time (6 hours or more) during the Summer session.
The following is one example of a student who would be eligible for additional Pell funds during the Summer session:

Sara completed 12 hours in the Fall semester and 12 hours in the Spring semester, and because she enrolled full-time (12 hours or more) for both the fall and spring semesters she received all of her current Pell eligibility. Sara enrolls in 6 hours for the Summer session, these 6 hours plus the 24 hours she took in the Fall and Spring semester equal a total of 30 hours for the aid year. Since Sara received all of her current aid year Pell eligibility in the Fall and Spring semesters AND she is enrolled in enough hours to complete 25 hours by the end of the Summer session AND she is enrolled at least half-time for the Summer session, Sara qualifies for additional Pell funds for the Summer session.

TRCC will use the federal “assumption method” to determine how many hours a transfer student has completed.

Example: TRCC will assume that a transfer student who received 100% of their current Pell award for the aid year at the prior school they attended has completed 24 credit hours, and thus would be eligible for additional Pell in the Summer session at TRCC as long as they were enrolled at least half time.

The amount of additional Pell a student qualifies for is determined by the student’s EFC (Expected Family Contribution) and the number of credit hours in which the student is enrolled. A student’s enrollment for the Summer session will be verified at the time of disbursement and adjusted based on hours enrolled. Students who haven’t used all of their current Pell eligibility in the Fall and Spring semesters can receive part to all of their remaining eligibility during the Summer session, depending upon their enrollment.
